Glauber Equipment Corporation (GEC) is a New York-based provider of centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, blowers, and fluid movement instrumentation and components. With 60 years of experience in our field, we have developed a reputation for supplying high-quality standard and custom pump and blower solutions to diverse industries.

Provided here is an overview of our product selection to help you identify which of our solutions would best fit the criteria of your specific project.

Centrifugal Pumps

A centrifugal pump operates by converting rotational kinetic energy into pressure energy that is used to pump the fluid. Their design involves a rapidly rotating component called an impeller, which is surrounded by an airtight passage known as the casing. Fluid enters the casing, flows along the axis of the rotating impeller, and is then whirled outward by centrifugal force toward the pump outlet. These types of pumps are part of the kinetic pump family, which are characterized by their use of high velocity to enable the flow of liquid.

Centrifugal pumps are the most common type of pump for transferring fluids and are suitable for practically any application involving the flow of low-viscosity liquids, such as water, solvents, and light oils. Relatively simple in design, these pumps are low maintenance, easy to operate, and generally low in cost. They can be classified into various types depending on the number of impellers, the impeller design, the type of casing, and the orientation of the shaft.

Some of the most common applications that rely on centrifugal pumps for fluid movement include:

  • Industrial production
  • Agriculture
  • Municipal water supply
  • Petroleum
  • Mining
  • Chemical

Positive Displacement Pumps

A positive displacement pump facilitates fluid movement by enclosing a fixed volume of fluid and then displacing it into a discharge pipe. The pumping action occurs in cycles and may be powered by pistons, plungers, screws, gears, diaphragms, or vanes. Positive displacement pumps typically have an expanding cavity on the side where suction occurs and a decreasing cavity on the side where the fluid is discharged.

Each cycle of operation involves fluid entering the pump inlet as the suction-side cavity expands, and then flowing out of the discharge-side cavity as it collapses. The volume of liquid remains constant for each operational cycle. Unlike centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps maintain a consistent flow rate at a given speed, regardless of the discharge pressure.

Positive displacement pumps include a range of different designs, most of which can be categorized as either reciprocating or rotary pumps. Reciprocating pumps are driven by the back-and-forth movement of a piston, plunger, or diaphragm, while rotary pumps rely on rotating gears or cogs.

One of the advantages of positive displacement pumps is that they can operate at higher pressures and with higher-viscosity fluids relative to centrifugal pumps. This makes them better suited for pumping applications involving the transfer of thicker fluids such as paints, oils, resins, and certain food products.

Some of the major applications using these types of pumps include:

Blowers

Industrial blowers are mechanical or electromechanical machines that facilitate the flow of air or gas for various purposes, including ventilation, cooling, exhausting, aspirating, and conveying. Blowers come in multiple different types, which are characterized by their design and method of air movement. These include:

  • Positive displacement blowers Similar to the concept behind positive displacement pumps, positive displacement blowers facilitate air flow through the cyclical filling and emptying of inlet-side and outlet-side chambers. These types of blowers are often used in pneumatic conveying, gas boosting, sewage cleaning and aeration, and gas collection and sparging.

  • Centrifugal air blowers These blowers rely on the kinetic energy generated by high-speed impellers or blades to increase air stream volume, which then flows through ducts, dampers, or other components. Centrifugal air blowers are commonly used in cooling and drying systems, air conveyor systems, fluid bed aerators, and combustion air supplies.

Ask the Experts

Choosing the right pump or blower for a transfer application is critical for optimizing the efficiency and performance of the system. Centrifugal pumps and blowers take advantage of kinetic energy through impeller movement to create fluid flow, while positive displacement pumps and blowers rely on expanding and contracting chambers or cavities. Each type of pump or blower has unique properties and advantages that make them suitable for specific applications.
